
A survey of antihypertensive drug prescription patterns in a teaching hospital
Exceptional Achievement
Client: This project was done at the University college hospital Ibadan as part of a larger project to monitor drug prescription patterns and provide informed counselling on better therapy alternatives.
Problem: The department was unableto make informed decisions on drug therapy counselling in the hospital due to a lack of information on common drug use and prescription patterns
Solution: A survey was carried out by breaking pharmacists into teams that focused on collecting and analyzing data from a particular drug class.
Process: for a duration of two weeks, prescriptions of antihypertensive drugs were collected and the data collated at different pharmacy units. After which the data was analyzed using SPSS and the results and interpretation of results were presented before the department.
Result: the department was able to harness the data gathered in providing informed counselling on hypertension therapy and therapeutic alternatives to prescribers.
